Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report February 27th

What a month this has been! The fly fishing action around the Smoky Mountains have been incredible. It’s honestly been the best fishing we’ve ever seen in February. It was also the warmest February in recent memory which undoubtly was a major factor in activity. We saw lots of nice sized fish put in the net and some true river monsters caught too!

Cherokee Trophy Section

The action is strong on the Cherokee Trophy Section. The Raven Fork has consistently put up some big fish this month. Many days we have seen great hatches of Caddis and Blue Winged Olives that have brought fish to the surface and taking dry flies. It’s hard to put into words the feeling of watching a 20+ inch Rainbow trout smash a dry fly…in February! Of course we have caught them on subsurface patterns and chunking big streamers too! Fly Fishing in Cherokee has been the clear winner this month.

Fly Fishing Guides Tuckasegee River Trout Fishing

Tuckasegee River Fly Fishing

The Tuckasegee River has been fishing very strong too. We’ve seen some incredible hatches all month long. Literally swarms of Caddis and Midge hatches have kept the fish very active. Often times hatches have been so thick of midges in the afternoon that it looks like fog hanging over the river. Caddis hatches have been so thick it looks like thousands of them on the water. Of course the fish have been boiling the water feeding on them too! This month we started our afternoon Float Trips which have been very fun. The last two hours before sunset action really turns on. It’s arguably  the best fishing of the day! Check it out on our website; Float Trip Special 1:30pm start time. We’re finishing up around 6:30-7:00pm.

The weather forecast this week has scattered thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ll gladly take the rain, we are still considered to be in a drought. Mid week into the weekend looks nice. Sunshine and low 60’s. Can’t beat that!

We’ll see you on the water

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report February 20th

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report February 20thGreat Smoky Mountains Fishing Report February 20th

Fishing in the Smoky Mountain region has been fantastic this month. Unusually warm and often record breaking highs have kept the region feeling more like mid April. February is typically the coldest most bitter month of the year in the Smokies. However that’s not the case in 2017, as extended forecasts models show we will be finishing up the month with nary a snow in sight!

The fishing action has been nothing short of the best we have ever seen for February. Dry fly action has reached legendary status and no doubt one we will be talking about for years to come. We’ve had more days of incredible dry fly action than any we recall. Certainly the warm weather has been the biggest factor in this phenomenon. Many days on the Tuckasegee River and Raven Fork have we seen blankets of Caddis and Blue Winged Olives hatching for hours.

Cherokee Fly Fishing

The fly fishing action has been very hot in Cherokee this month. Warmer air tempratures have meant active trout. Monster trout are the norm on the Cherokee Trophy waters and our guides have put clients on some of the biggest trout of their lives this month. Pretty scenery, big trout and even a few Elk roaming the river banks make this destination hard to pass up!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report February 20th, Tuckasegee River Fly Fishing Guides Bryson City Cherokee Float Trips

Tuckasegee River

The Tuckasegee River currently has 17,000 trout per mile. That number will start exploding as the state resumes Spring stocking efforts on March 3rd this year. We should see trout count per mile totals hitting around 24,000 in the next few weeks. Action here has been ridiculous most days! Rainbow, Brown, and Brook trout are taking flies aggressively all day with periods of increased activity on the sunny days. Heavy Caddis and Blue Winged Olive hatches have kept fish very active. Most days we are seeing good hatches mid morning that have us throwing dry flies to rising trout! February has never been a dry fly kind of month until this year! We’ll gladly take it.

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report February 20th

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is fishing good for February. Warm air tempratures have kept the fish active inside the park on the lower elevation streams. It’s still chilly at night in the high elevation streams, however we have managed a few nice Brook trout when up high. The fishing here has been decent enough that guiding inside the park has been possible

Reservations are filling up quickly as March approaches. Booking well in advance is highly recommended to get peak days. Far and above the best fly fishing action possible will be the Tuckasegee River. With as many trout per mile as this river has, you don’t want to miss it!

Hope y’all have a great week and we’ll see you on the water!

Fly Fishing and Family

Fly Fishing and Family, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Fly Fishing and Family

Someday when I’m too old to fish by myself anymore, I want to sit on the porch and reflect on memories of family. Certainly many of my thoughts are going to involve being on the water with my two children who share my love of fly fishing. Through the years I’ve watched as these two have delevoped into their own little personalities, both similar but very different all the same. No matter which direction their lives and activities take them, one thing brings them together every time, and that is fishing.

Fly Fishing and Family, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Often enough our adventures lead us to some great destinations or catching a moment that I just want to freeze in time. These are special times that we share as a family and once in a while we share with all of you. Many of you have watched my children grow but may have never realized who the kids in the pictures were. Brittany and Seth are now 15 and 12. Both love school, sports, picking on each other and for now hanging out with dad and mom. Although with the teenage years upon us, I’m sure the latter will change. My hope is when the dust settles they still come back to fly fishing with ol’ dad.

Fly Fishing and Family, Eugene Shuler Fly Fishing the Smokies Best Trout Fishing Guide in the Great Smoky Mountains Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Cherokee Bryson City

A few years back I stepped away from a great career and traded my suits and ties for waders and boots. My decision to make such a drastic move was based solely on two things; one was my trust in God, the other was my love of family. I worked nights, weekends, and holidays and never saw my family other than in pictures or when they were asleep. When it finally hit me, I had missed lots of time, fun times that can never be gotten back. In the grand scheme of things it wasn’t worth it. I felt it wasn’t fair that I missed the only childhood they would ever have. These days I don’t miss much

Fly Fishing and Family, Tuckasegee River Float Trip,

I suppose what I’m rambling on about is this; Take every opportunity you have to spend time with your family and especially your children. In this digital age of video games and cell phones there are far too many distractions that keep us apart. Fly Fishing and family time go hand in hand. Spending time outdoors whether it be fishing or whatever, will be time well spent. One day you may go from taking your kids fishing, to them taking you!

See y’all on the water

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January 22nd

This past week has been adventurous for us at Fly Fishing the Smokies. Late January is when we start gearing up for our 2017 guiding season. There are many tasks to be done such as training new staff, doing inventory of equipment, replacing old gear, purchasing new. One of my favorites is training the new guides. We put many days on the river together as a team teaching new guides the waters we fish; how to row drift boats, fishing all the streams we guide on, covering as much area as possible etc. It’s always fun to bond with your teammates getting to know each one. This is when I finally get to ride up front of the boats casting to a few trout. I almost feel out of place, as I’m used to being the one rowing the boats and pointing out places to cast for our guests, instead of being the caster.

Warm weather this past week and intermittent showers have kept the fishing excellent and our guides busy on the water. The bite has been consistent and hatches plentiful on many of our area streams and rivers.

The Raven Fork in Cherokee

Our new client Matt had a stellar day this past Friday on the Trophy Section in Cherokee. Waters were stained and little high because of heavy rains the night before. Water clarity was near perfect for keeping us hid from sight of these experienced trout. Tea stained color makes fish less spooky and more eager to eat as food items are dislodged from the bottom. The trout on the Trophy Section see some of the best flies and anglers making them notoriously challenging. Matt saw the Raven Fork with near perfect conditions and the fishing didn’t disappoint!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January 22nd,

Heavy rains Sunday will have water levels elevated for the first of the week across the Smokies region. We expect water levels to drop quickly as the area is still classified as being in an extreme drought. The mountains are soaking up as much water as possible. However it has rained more days than not since the first week of December it seems. We need it, so nobody is complaining! Temperatures will drop slightly towards the end of the week as we dry out. It’s still going to be plenty nice to be outside. Solunar charts have the fishing as excellent towards the end of the week too. Should be a great weekend to be in the Smokies.

We’ll see you on the water!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January 18th

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January 18th

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January 18th

It’s been unseasonably warm for over a week now in the Smoky Mountains. Day time highs have felt more like April than January. We are certainly going to pay for all this beautiful weather at some point. We say bring it on, we love fishing in the snow. In the meantime, we’ll take these warm temps and the great fly fishing action they bring!

T-Rex

The best action around the region right now is the Tuckasegee River. It’s hard to compete with 17,000 trout per mile currently in the river. Fact is the fishing has been awesome this month. Many days we are seeing good hatches of Blue Winged Olives, Winter Stoneflies and Midges. These hatches are bringing trout to the surface to feed on dry flies! Float Trips have been very fun for our guests this past week. We’ve seen folks catch Grand Slams all week, and one gentleman caught a monster Brown Trout that we named the T-Rex of the Tuckasegee!

The Raven Fork

The Raven Fork and Oconaluftee River in Cherokee is fishing very well. Water conditions are near perfect for this time of year. Trout are feeding aggressively throughout the entire day. We are seeing a consistent afternoon hatch of tiny Blue Winged Olives that are bringing trout on the surface to feed. Nothing like watching a 20 inch plus trout rise to a small dry fly. Fighing and landing said fish will have you occupied for a bit. The near perfect water conditions have these Cherokee River monsters unwilling to throw in the towel easily.

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January 18th

The Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is fishing good for the month. Typically January can be a tough affair inside the park. Streams are cold and the wild park fish are lethargic and will feed just a few short hours per day. Fortunately this isn’t a typical January, days have been warm and water temps are good making for some periods of very good fishing. There is no need to get an early start this of year fishing inside the GSMNP. Sleep in and drink and extra cup of coffee as you won’t be missing anything starting at day break. Mid morning until mid afternoon have been the ticket here. We are seeing good hatches of Little black Winter Stoneflies on streams such as Deep Creek and the Oconaluftee River. Keep moving and look for areas of slack water to find the best activity.

The forecast for the remainder of the week and weekend have the Smoky Mountains receiving much needed rain. Even though the area has recieved copious amounts of rain over the past month, we are still considered to be in extreme drought. Air temperatures will be hoovering in the low 60’s in Bryson City and Gatlinburg. The rains this week should turn the bite on even more and anglers may see be surprised by some big meat eating Brown trout feeding close to the banks!

Have a great week, we’ll see you on the water!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January

The fishing in January around the Great Smoky Mountains region has been fantastic so far. Winter is when we typically see great subsurface fishing and bigger fish landed. January is on point so far with one exception; Dry fly action! Yes you read the right, and no we aren’t crazy. Dry fly fishing in January makes about as much sense as screen doors on submarines right? For many reasons, most of which are boring and make us sound totally geeked out, we are seeing some great dry fly action. Hatches happening right now are Little Black Winter Stoneflies, Blue Winged Olives and lots of midges. It’s pretty special to be fishing for rising trout in the Winter months, so we’ll gladly take the opportunity!

Tuckasegee River Fishing

The Tuckasegee River is fishing incredibly well this month. Water tempratures are excellent and we’re seeing good numbers of trout on the surface taking small dry flies in the flat sections of water. At times we see upwards of three acres of river dimpled with rising trout! This leaves nothing but air and opportunity between you and your next best catch. This is especially true if you happen to be fishing from the comfort of a drift boat or raft. Cloudy, overcast and slightly rainy days have been fishing best!

Raven Fork Trophy Trout

The Cherokee Trophy Section on the Raven Fork has fished very well this winter. Water levels have been great and hatches are consistent from early morning until late evening. In the “Land of the Giants” you must have great presentation and the right fly or you can get left scratching your head. These big fish see the best anglers and best flies all day, making them a pro at snubbing your offerings. However get it right, and you may be wearing that big small all winter long!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report January, Great Smoky Mountains Fly Fishing Winter Fishing Report, Fly Fishing the Smokies,

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report for January is pretty good considering the below normal cold for this time of year. The Smokies recieved a decent amount of snowfall this past weekend leaving roads temporarily closed and covering the landscape in winter wonderland. Little black winter stoneflies have been hatching all day long inside the park now. These little guys can be seen crawling over snow covered banks and for whatever reason seem to be attracted to your clothing. Trout go crazy for them splashing wildly after dries trying to escape the surface, and feeding aggressively underneath the surface.

It should be a fantastic week to be fishing the region. We’ll see you on the water!

December Fly Fishing 2016

December Fly Fishing action has been incredible. To say we have had the best season on record for December is an understatement! Good weather and stream conditions have contributed to great angler success rates for big trout. Bryson City, and Cherokee North Carolina have been at the top of the list for big fish locations to visit. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge streams inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have seen their share of good fishing for wild trout.

December Fly Fishing, Fly Fishiing the Smokies, Great Smoky Mountains Fly Fishing, Tuckasegee River Fly Fishing Guides, Float Trips in the Smoky Mountains, Trout Fishing the Smoky Mountains,

Tuckasegee River Float Trips

Tuckasegee River Float Trips have been outstanding for consistent action and some massive trout. More season appropriate temperatures have turned the trout on big time as we’re seeing lots of massive Brook trout become very active. Cloudy days, even some rain have made for the best times to be out to catch a big fish! We are catching some very nice Brown trout now as well. The biggest December news on the Tuckasegee River has been fishing with dry flies! Yes you read that correctly, dry fly fishing in December. Crazy right!? All month long we have witnessed literally acres of rising fish on the Tuckasegee River starting mid morning and continuing all day until around 5:00pm. Hundreds of fish at times all on the surface sipping dries. It’s a been sight to behold.

December Fly Fishing, North Carolina Steelhead Fishing, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Rainy days on the Tuckasegee River have also seen some Steelhead running upstream from Fontana Lake. Stocked in the early 1970’s by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource commission, Steelhead just like those stocked into the Great Lakes thrive in the lakes and rivers in Bryson City. These hard fighting acrobatic fish will give you a fight like no other!

Cherokee Trophy Section, Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report December 14th, Fly Fishing the Smokies

Cherokee Trophy Trout

December fly fishing on the Cherokee Trophy Section on the Raven Fork and Oconaluftee River is excellent. We are seeing good numbers of big fish hooked all month long. We’ve also seen lots of broken tippet and bent hooks! These big trout are notoriously hard fighters and will rip the guts out of a reel and have been known to break rods on many occasions. These aren’t the easiest fish to catch as they see some of the best anglers and flies on a daily basis. They will however leave a smile on your face that takes weeks to wipe off! Of course cloudy days and rain are best, but big fish can be caught on pretty days too.

A few more days are left in the month and we can’t wait to see what our guests will catch next!

Tight Lines y’all!

Great Smoky Mountains Fishing Report for December 15th

Bundle up today if you’re headed out! Expect day time highs to only be in the low 30’s today across the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding towns of Gatlinburg and Bryson City. Overnight lows in the Smokies dipped into the teens on most higher elevation peaks. Thick fog in Bryson City was frozen to tree branches and porch steps this morning. I found this out the hard way as I bounced down them on my arse first thing this morning! Nonetheless, it’s going to be a great day. The NRS Clearwater drift boat is hooked up and I’m rolling out to hit the Tuckasegee River with a long time friend and client who can lay out casts with the best of them!

The Tuckasegee River has seen an abundance of Blue Winged Olive hatches along with numerous midges coming off around 9:30 am and continuing through the day until the sun starts to set. Rising trout all across the river is a very welcomed sight especially in December. Who would have thought we would be targeting rising fish with dry flies this time of year. Very cool indeed!

The Cherokee Trophy section on the Raven Fork is producing fish water temps have cooled a couple degrees pushing fish into deeper water and holding tight to the bottom. They will feed all day long they just won’t move very far to take your fly. An accurate cast and dead drift are key to fishing here this time of year.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been cold in the mornings so an early start isn’t necessary right now. Sleeping in and eating a big breakfast and opting for an extra cup of coffee is a better way to start. Not much has been happening before 9:00am this week inside the park. Once the sun comes up and light hits the water you start noticing activity on the side pockets and calmer water first.

Hope you all have a great week and spend some time outdoors. We’ll see you on the water!
