Fly Fishing on Hazel Creek
The meals are fantastic. Our guides know how to cook back in the mountains, and will feed you some of the good down home country cooking that we grew up with. A big country breakfast every morning with sausage, eggs, bacon, drop biscuits, fried potatoes and even pancakes. We’ll make up sack lunches after breakfast and head to the water for the day’s fishing. Dinner, or “supper” as us country boys call it, is always amazing. Our dinner menu includes item’s such as fresh pan fried trout, marinated pork chops, grilled chicken breasts, grilled vegetables, potatoes, pinto beans, corn bread, and cobblers. We come to fish, but being out in the mountains is about more than just fishing, it’s about enjoying the outdoors, and eating some good food too!

Paula Deen is opening a new restaurant at the Island in Pigeon Forge Tennessee called Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. The Grand of the new restaurant is April 27th, we plan to be there with bells on! On her most recent visit to the Smoky Mountains, Paula and her husband Capt. Michael took in some fly fishing on the Tuckasegee River near Cherokee NC. Fly Fishing the Smokies was proud to have the honor of being their guides for the day.
Paula is no stranger to fishing, having beat longtime Bass Fishing Professional and celebrity Jimmy Houston in The Bag Lady Foundation Charity Tournament last year. Paula can cast a fly rod as good as she can cook! The trout in the Tuckasegee River were runnin’ scared as Paula and Capt. Michael took to working the runs and pools with hand tied flies their guides made for the day.
If you happen to be in the Pigeon Forge, Sevierville area stop by Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen at the Island and get yourself some good ol Southern down-home cooking! Served family style with all the good stuff you come to expect from your grandmothers kitchen! Pecan Pie, Sweet Tea, Fried Chicken….Sign us UP!
Fly Fishing the Smokies offers guided Fly Fishing Trips in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville Tennessee. So when your down at Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen downing that glass of tea, give us a holler. We’ll show you the best Trout streams in the Great Smoky Mountains. We’ll also teach you how to fly fish in the process! Now how’s that for Southern Charm Ya’ll.
After a brutally cold Winter, the thaw looks to finally be here and so is the great fishing that the Great Smoky Mountains are known for.
The Tuckasegee River in North Carolina is the hottest destination at the moment for great trout fishing action in the Smoky Mountains. The Tuckasegee River is a western sized tail-water that offers perfect water temperatures for trout. It just happens to be one of the most stocked rivers in the south, boasting trout count totals near 12,500 trout per mile! This is great news for those learning to fly fish, simply because no other stream will offer you as many trout or chances of hooking trout than does the Tuckasegee. Drift boat fishing ( called Float Trips) on the Tuckasegee River have been very good this past week too. Scheduled Flow Releases have been good for everyone. The water has been rising mid morning and turning off by late afternoon keeping both wade fisherman and the guides with boats happy.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is off to a good start. We have seen plenty of trout rising to eat dry flies by mid morning and carrying over to late evening. The water has been high compared to last year, but the fish are hungry, and barely spooky. We are just starting to guide in the several of the Smokies streams at present time, and will add more streams as the action continues to improve.
Best flies are;
Blue Duns #14-18, Little Black Caddis in #16-18, Black Caddis Pupae in #16-18, Little Winter Stonefly nymphs in #16-20, Little Winter Stonefly dries in #14-18, Blue Winged Olives in #18-22, Quill Gordons in #12-14, egg patterns in #10-12, Rainbow Warriors in #14-20, and black midges in #22-26. For Streamer patterns try black and olive Woolly Buggers in sizes #6-8, dark brown Sculpins in #6-8, and black Rabbit Strip Zonkers in #6-10.
Fontana Lake is getting better for Walleye, and Crappie. The top choice for bank fishing is still catching fish with live night-crawler rigs working the along the edges of the shoreline. Working rattle traps and deep spinner baits across points next to deep drop offs are pulling in good sized Largemouth. and Smallmouth bass. Work them slowly and hold on. Walleye are best caught by jigging live night crawlers near rock walls in the vicinity of creek and river mouths. Trolling deep running crank baits and plastic minnows near creek and river mouths at depths of 45-60 feet are bringing up some good fish too. Walleye have yet to start their runs up river just yet, but it shouldn’t be long.
Remember to check area fishing regulations as March Madness applies to fishing too. Regulations and season closures will vary between watersheds and designations. Know the regulations before you make that first cast.
See you on the water!

Winter Fly Fishing in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee can be a special cold weather treat!
Gone are the maddening crowds of people roaming the trails and streams, and gone are the scorching temperatures associated with a typical southern Summer day. For the most part Winter in the Smoky Mountains are normally a mild affair, with day time temperatures reaching the mid 50’s-60’s.
One of the special treats for Winter time Fly Fishing is the abundance of good managed water in both North Carolina and Tennessee.
In Tennessee, the Town of Gatlinburg has special Delayed Harvest Regulations until March 1st. What this means for the visiting angler is the water loaded with Trout, most averaging 20 inches in length! This section is Catch and Release ONLY and you have to use artificial lures or flies with a single hook. So in short terms, this place is perfect for fly fishing. While most fishing is done in the midst of the shops and attractions in town, the scenery isn’t bad, Gatlinburg is a place. Plus you’re never too far from a cup of Hot Chocolate. Fly Fishing Gatlinburg in the winter is a great place for those wanting to learn to Fly Fish, it offers easy access to the river, good wading, and plenty of big trout. What more could you want!?
Fly Fishing North Carolina in the Winter is amazing! The NC side of the Smoky Mountains has miles of perfect trout filled water. Starting with the Tuckasegee River, which has a state managed Delayed Harvest section. This 7 mile long stretch of water is loaded to the max with Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. Catching Grand Slam of all three species is a big possibility! The Tuckasegee River is a wide sprawling Rocky mountain suized tailwater river making trout fishing very near perfect here. During the winter months you can expect between 7,000-8,000 trout per mile. We offer both Wade Trips and Float Trips on this amazing river.
The Nantahala River in North Carolina is another great fly fishing destination. Nominated as Trout Unlimiteds Top 100 rivers in the US, the Nantahala River offers two distict sections of river. The Upper section which is a Delayed Harvest section, (catch and release), is a small stream stocked heavily with Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. You can expect 2,500-3,00 willing trout per mile here. There are some great insect hatches that can bring the trout to the surface after a dry fly all year long. The lower Nantahala River is a tail water fishery and is hands down one of the best wild trout streams in the country. Anglers regularly catch some impressive sized wild Rainbow and Brown trout here each week.
Fly Fishing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during the winter can be an amazing experience. You will find solitude and spectacular scenery and beautiful wild trout. The streams in the Smokies are home to all wild Brook Trout, Brown Trout, and Rainbow Trout. The fishing here can be equally as good as other streams, especially during periods of warmer temperatures.
Fly Fishing the Smokies provides all necessary gear for fly fishing during the winter months. We supply Waders,Wading Boots, Fly Rods, Reel, leaders, tippet, and all flies at no additional charge. All you need to do is bundle up and let us take care of the rest!
